Where do you look for inspiration when you want to change something in your home? Do you follow any trends or have a favourite style you like for a long time? I like old-fashioned Interior Design magazines, Pinterest, and Instagram, but visiting interior design fairs is at the top of my inspiration list. They happen less often, so I was excited to see the Dutch VTwonen Design Fair a few weeks ago.
This time, four stylists working for the Dutch Interior Design magazine VT Wonen created four different homes in different styles. The styles were: Puur Landelijk, Raw Romance, New Brutalism, Mid-Century Design.
I didn’t see any new trends here, but let’s look closer at the beautiful homes and styles they created for us to see.
Style Puur Landelijk by Marianne
Puur Landelijk, in other words, Countryside or Rustic Interior Design. This style is very cosy and warm; it feels like a blanket around you. You will get lost in many natural materials – like wool, linen, wood and stone. The colour palette is also minimalised to earthy tones such as beige, brown, and cream. In this home, I found a beautiful old, imperfect mirror, a selection of old plates, spoons, cups, and an enormous flowerpot. It’s all about beauty in patina, objects which get old – and give so much character to any home.
I like the mix of vintage furniture and accessories, but I would need more modern items to feel good here. It has an inspiring interior that gives the home a natural feel.
Style Mid-Century Design by Kelly
Do you like mid-century design furniture? Well, you will feel good in this home. It’s a very popular trend, but I would say the style isn’t just about reviving the past; it’s about blending timeless retro elements that speak to you with a contemporary lifestyle. You can see all the items and more pictures here.
I walked back to this space a few times, enjoying each element and the selection of furniture and accessories. It has so much character! I can imagine someone who lives here travels a lot to South America, has an exotic taste and loves bold colors.
A large part of this home was the open bathroom. In the middle were two free-standing glass sinks; this big glass vase with exotic flowers was between them. It’s bold and beautiful and gives me so much joy. Can you imagine putting such flowers and vases in your bathroom?
Style Raw Romance by Lissa
The colour burgundy is very trendy in fashion in Autumn 2024. I was surprised to see it so powerfully presented at the Interior Design Fair. What a bold move to paint an entire wall in burgundy in your eating room or bathroom. It’s a statement. If you love this colour, go for it! I would probably use it only as a slight accent 😉 See more here.
The last home was a light, spacious, modern apartment called NEW Brutalism. I don’t know why, but it feels like a loft in a skyscraper in Berlin or London. The first impression could be cold and sterile, with shiny metal and glass objects.
I imagine someone with a strong character and particularly modern taste lives here. There was a soft touch to it – this huge, brown, cosy sofa and furry carpet. It’s a very intriguing combination, which I like. It feels fresh and modern.
For generations, humans love the natural appeal of elements that make them feel calm and at peace. I believe that with natural ingredients, we can give our homes and garden the organic and trendy look that we desire.
I have never been to Mexico before, so after a long flight, I had a hard time to adopt my eyes to the intense light. The warm breeze which grabbed me directly after I left a plane was heaven….
I will tell you honestly that it seems to me that Rotterdam is not a city for everyone. You wonder why? It’s a raw, modern city where you need to put an extra effort to discover it – and either you hate it or love it!
I find it truly inspiring to discover Olja’s style and how her aesthetic extends beyond her work into their family home. Even with the arrival of her son Leo, the family hasn’t compromised on love for decorating, or style. It’s a beautiful reminder that style and family life can coexist!
