Room Tour > Teener Chill Zone
I’m so excited to finally share our older son Franek’s Room with you! I wanted to create a room that expresses his personality and that he could grow into the coming years.
Do you remember my first blog post about : HOW TO CREATE A ROOM FOR PRETEEN BOY
When I look at his space now, I believe we are not very far from the first concept!
Sophisticated & Sporty but also Personal.
When we moved here, Franek was 12 and talked a lot about his need for privacy. I believe it was a perfect time to separate my two sons and give Franek the room he needed. Now he is 15 and before we understand why his room looks like it looks, let’s get to know him a bit. Franek is a very sportive type; he plays Waterpolo and likes to exercise in his free time. His second passion is, of course, not school but gaming 😉 so game corner was needed too. A cosy chill area was also important, as he likes chilling in his bed, listening to music and watching films. I asked him about his room and what was the most important when creating it.
Q&A Franek – 15 years old
What do you like the most about your room?
The gaming corner, of course! I like that it is separated from my school desk. Chill.
Why did you choose the dark furniture?
I had white furniture first, but I figured black fits better in a teen’s room. I simply like Black.
Do you miss something in your room? or would you change anything?
I am considering a new wider, low bed. I have slept in a bunk bed since I am four, and I am up for a change 😉
Dark Colours in Teen’s Room
I don’t know when it happened, but all his clothes were becoming darker and darker, and his room also needed to be dark. Before, he would be happy with colourful patterned garments, but it changed to simple black, grey and white last years. I dippy believe it’s just a phase, and he will come back to colour in his life 😉 His Teens room is also kept in the dark tones, grey and black, with a splash of white.
Don’t be afraid of painting walls in dark colours in your kid’s room; it helps to make it cosy. We used a dark grey tone, even though my son requested black. It makes it more playful when you have Black furniture in front of it, as it gives even more depth into the space.
Modern & Sophisticated
Many teens nowadays are sensitive to trends. Choosing the right furniture can be challenging, as we do not want them to look childish or un-cool. I believe Rafa-kids’ furniture touches the right spot in their hearts. The design is simple yet sophisticated. Franek has slept in his Rafa-kids bed for more than ten years already. The H wardrobe in black looks stylish and has enough space for all his clothes. The K desk fits in his room just right. An elegant working corner where he can focus and do his homework.
How to make it Cozy.
As I mentioned above, the dark colour walls in the teenager’s room can help a lot. We don’t need to paint all space, but some colour accent will help to break the monochromatic feel. The key elements for cosines are TEXTURES. I don’t know how many times I wrote about it. The whole room changed when we got this big, fluffy carpet into his room. Probably everyone in our house likes to lie on it from time to time 😉
Storage and Organising
My experience is that the older our son gets, the less stuff he needs. I don’t know if this is the minimalist gen running in the family, but I can tell you, I appreciate it very much. This also means that he doesn’t need much storage in his room. We have organised his belongings with the String System. We like this classic design a lot, and it can grow with your child. You can add extra shelves when needed. Our son keeps his clothes in H wardrobe in Black. The first one we made in this finish, especially for him.
Personal
It’s crucial that your teen feels the room is his safe place. Closing doors and enjoying alone time, and not being bothered is something I try to respect. I remember that feeling when I was growing up. Create personal touch with large pictures from the holidays. Or a collection of family photos if your teen is ok with that. You can also see how Franek personalised his H wardrobe with his caps and glasses. He doesn’t have toys anymore, but there are a few he keeps and uses as a decoration. That makes the room much more personal. Your child’s hobby will surely help to personalise the room too. Our sun is very sportive and exercises a lot. First, he kept his surfing board on the wall. Now it gave space to a punching bag and some weights.
What are your teen’s hobbies? Embrace them and make them an essential part of the space. Happy styling, everyone!
In this Cool Teen’s room, you can find Rafa-kids furniture :
H wardrobe > available also in White, but for Teenager Space Black was much more suitable.
F&A75 bed set > We chose the F bunk bed in Black and the lower bed in White for contrast.
