Do you remember that we moved to our new home in February? I wrote a Blog Post about it over here, if you are not familiar please have a look.
It will take some time to make this space ours, and we want to take it to step by step. Fortunately, we did not have to rebuild the apartment, so the basic interior was there, made for us, so we could start decorating. One of our biggest dreams was to have a long, beautiful table. We imagined our family life rolling around it. We kept looking for 2,5 m long wooden table, but somehow we hit the wall. First, the tables on the market were not speaking to our taste or values. We decided we needed to find someone to make a custom table for us. Taking into account that this is such an essential element of our new home, we knew it would be an investment. We wanted something unique!
We got a tip from a friend to contact Lakewood Creations. The appointment followed at their workshop in the heart of Rotterdam’s Europort. This was the moment we got hooked! Harm van de Ven is a creative director, and he introduced us to the company and fantastic story of their wood sourcing in South America. They have an area of flooded forest and tons of underwater trees which are waiting to be salvaged. Scouts go out by boat every day to handpick the best logs. When landed in The Netherlands, Harm’s team works on bringing the natural beauty of this wood to life. Read more about Lakewood’s mission and why this is the most sustainable way to source woodhere.
We were walking like small kids in a candy store in their workshop, touching all different kinds of wood and trying to find something we would like. Some of the sorts were extremely heavy, and others were turning red after some time. Harm has a story about every single type and sample in his vast warehouse. Following his advice, the Basralocus wood became our choice with a dark stain to finish the final table. We were convinced by the man to go for a gap between the two sides of the table. First unsure, we have to agree now that it was good advice. Harm and his team chose nicely nerved pieces from one tree and mirrored them, creating this beautiful effect finished with the subtle live edge. We wanted the table legs to be wooden too. A bit more complicated than the usual steel frame but what a final effect! Harm went all the way while detailing and making sure the table stays perfect for years. The underside with cuts and anti-tension steel looks as impressive as the top — craftsmanship at the highest level.
When the time came, six people delivered the 3,5 meters long table and installed it at our place! We celebrated the moment with a nice lunch all together. The wood is so beautiful and constantly changing with the light.
The table became the heart of our living space. I like my morning coffee over here when the boys are out for school. The dinners with friends when we finally have space for everybody are the most favorite Arek’s moments. We play board games; we help with kids homework over here, we get our evening glass of wine and talk….
We can’t imagine any other way, our table it’s a piece of furniture for a lifetime.
