Children love bunk beds, mostly because of the climbing up and down and having a special place to play, hide and sleep in one.
Of course, bunk beds are not only about fun, but there are also safety aspects to be taken into consideration. Here at Rafa-kids, we often receive messages from parents asking: why do we advise the F bunk bed for children +6 years old, and if it could be ok to use it for younger children too?
According to the rules, six years is the minimum age for using a high sleeper.
Children at that age are usually developed enough to safely handle the bunk bed, climb the ladder, and sleep comfortably on the elevated bed. If this fits your child, then you’re good to go! However, here is your little checklist:
1 > An age of 6 years old is required by the safety regulations for bunk beds. Nevertheless, our own son got one at age 4. Every child is different, so make decisions accordingly.
2 > Your child should easily climb in and out of bed alone, without the parent’s assistance.
3 > Does your child needs to go to the bathroom at night? Then it could be helpful to leave a soft light in the room. Try to assist them during the first nights, and be sure that the child feels comfortable with that.
4 > Are your kid’s restless sleepers? It’s necessary to check that the bed has side protections on both sides.
Please note that F bunk bed is much lower than many bunk beds on the market. Your child will sleep around 140cm above the floor. This way you can see your child when standing next to the bed and make the bed easily. Our bunk bed is very strong and easily holds 120kg required by law. Feel free to lay next to your child for a good night read and an extra hug. We have seen six kids jumping on our beds too, but don’t tell this to anyone!
If you have any additional questions – please email us,
and we will be more than happy to help.
However, there are more things to think about when selecting a bunk bed:
Safety First: Check if the bed has elevated side rails. We make sure to go above and beyond the European safety standard, with 20cm of protection for added safety
Stability and Strength: Ensure the bed can support not just your child but also a parent, just in case you need to get up there when your child is unwell, for example. Our beds exceed the 120kg weight requirement, thanks to the extra thick materials and double support beams.
Flexibility: The F bunk bed comes with two ladders, giving you the freedom to place it in any corner of the room.
Height Matters: We have chosen a half-high bed so your child will sleep about 140cm above the floor. This way, you can easily see your child when standing next to the bed and make the bed with less effort.
Please keep these simple advice in mind when shopping around for a bunk bed, and make sure that your child is ready for it.

Children love a cozy atmosphere for reading books. That’s the reason we have introduced reading as an evening ritual. For this ritual, I created a cozy corner for my six-year-old daughter under Rafa-kids F bunk bed.
I’m always excited when I see stylish houses which also show children’s rooms. They should be part of our houses and deserve our attention too. This beautiful home of Sarah Pickersgill-Brown, and her family is a fantastic example of that!
My husband hates the huge amount of screws most of the companies send you to build the furniture. This frustration drove us to make the assembly of Rafa-kids furniture stand out from the crowd and not go for cheap and old-fashioned solutions. But what’s the system and what makes the assembly so much easier?
