We often say that the times are changing, and sometimes it is nice to see that they change for the better.
When I was pregnant for the first time, 18 and then 14 years ago, there were not many options for gender-neutral clothes or deco for children. I’m a mom of two boys, and unfortunately, I ended up with a lot of tiny blue outfits for our babies ;) I never really liked the blue and pink colours dedicated to a specific gender. If I can be honest, I still don’t’ like it!
Happily trends and market adopted to changes a lot last years. Now the offer is much broader, and creating a Gender-Neutral Nurseryand a Wardrobe for your upcoming Baby is much easier.
It’s pure joy to focus today on the Neutral Nursery Ideas and give you some tips&tricks if you would like to create one at home. Let’s keep things rolling.
Why it’s a good idea to create Gender Neutral Nursery :
There are a few reasons why parents choose to create a Gender-Neutral Nursery.
The first one can be, of course, not knowing the sex of the Baby. Even with modern technology, I can imagine some parents would like to keep this surprise up until birth.
The second one, which I am a firm believer of, is to create a Nursery Bedroom, which is timeless. You can imagine that the space will evolve fast as your child grows. The neutral approach to the baby room also allows making space for your child’s character to reveal itself! For this reason, in particular, it is also better not to be drawn to a theme that might soon date or will not match your child’s temperament or interest. The third reason may merely be the aesthetic of such a room. It is mostly very serene and gives a calm visual effect.
I also sincerely believe that Nursery should be like any other room in the house. If you love vintage furniture, it would be great to have also a few pieces from your childhood or some unique finds from vintage markets. The mood will be minimal and elegant in a modern house, right? Greenery lovers will add plants to the Nursery – it can benefit the Baby’s health and create a great vibe in the interior. Please think about it while making room for your upcoming child. Let’s not be fooled by any standard boys or girls rooms, but let’s listen to our intuition and taste and make our own.
Where do we start?
1. Choose the colours you like.
I find using pictures especially helpful, and they can be from your holidays, magazines, something to express your mood. I selected a simple image from our Summer Holidays. It gives a soft, relaxed feeling, and the rope adds the texture, making it more exciting and playful. This picture is monochrome but still interesting to look at; this is precisely what we want in our Nursery Room. I extracted the four most essential colours from the photo since I suggest not talking to many.
2. Create a mood board.
It’s good to start with furniture.
– for the neutral look, I would suggest staying in primary colours, of white and wood,
– if you rather have dark furniture, of course, go for it, try to keep it in similar tones,
– add essential elements like a lamp, mirror, shelves – the eye-catcher in the room, which will define the style,
3. Do the magic with accessories.
Sometimes I hear people say that Gender Neutral Nurseries are a bit bland. I believe the stimulating room can be created in the same colour pallet, but we need to put an effort to add interesting textures. Think about a large soft rug, a comfortable armchair with hairy upholstery, or ratan lamps. Blankets and pillows are also crucial, not only for your comfort but will bring warmth to any basic furniture. I love the contrast between modern furniture and soft textures.
Let’s learn a few tricks on how to create such a beautiful Gender Neutral Space for a Baby :
1. Sarah decided to go for all-natural wood furniture, which makes a beautiful base in this space.
2. The walls and curtain are white, as most of the accessories in the room.
3. Look at this fantastic fluffy carpet! Don’t you want to walk on it? The large lamp is a real eye-catcher in this room, has a texture, which makes it even more enjoyable.
4. Rounded armchair in a soft beige colour, and original shaped wooden table, give the space a modern look.
Do you have a large boring wall in the room?
Sarah decided to put an attractive asymmetric mirror and Rafa-kids L shelf. I adore this idea.
If you look closely, all elements put on the shelf have different textures – so you have soft, cosy tiny shoes; the ratan toys and the garments are also all in beige. All hangers are the same colour and size. Don’t you love the entire look? The natural warm feel and welcoming atmosphere?
Thank you so much, Sarah, for the inspiration!
