Q&A – April mom of Oliver from New York, USA
Do you know our series Q&A with Rafa-kids customers?Â
The idea was born out of the desire to get to know families choosing Rafa-kids design. We already traveled to Spain to meet Andrea. Berlin to see the lovely family of Victoria. We visited Sladjana in Amsterdam, where we meet her little boy Ezra. Do not forget our chat with Belinda, and her boys, from Melbourne!Â
At this challenging COVID time, when we do not feel so comfortable to travel, I’m glad to take you for a little tour to NY. Our family was planning a long vacation in America this Spring. Unfortunately, we needed to cancel it. It’s for me even more special to have the chance to talk with mom from New York this time.Â
Hello April, thank you for accepting an invitation to a small interview. It’s a pleasure to follow you on Instagram / under Aprilmayatherton / and enjoy a glimpse of your family life in Big Apple. I adore your minimal aesthetic and sustainable way of living. I’m glad I have the chance to ask you a few questions and share with our readers part of your daily life.Â
1. Could you shortly introduce yourself and tell us about where you live and with whom?
I’m April, from NYC (by way of Toronto, Canada), and I live with my husband Mike, my son Oliver (2), with another baby boy on the way!
2. Do you like to raise your child in NY, and what are your favorite places to go with Ollie?
NYC is an incredible place to raise a child. We may not have a big backyard, but we have so much culture, beauty and diversity literally right outside our door. With an easy walk or subway ride, we can be strolling the Highline, cruising the East River on a ferry along the skyline, or exploring one of the many galleries, such as the Noguchi Museum. And then top it off with a sweet treat and some vintage treasures at the Brooklyn Flea.
3. I noticed you have a passion for photography and design. Do you have any background in these fields?Â
I’m a marketer by background, so design has always been an important facet of that. I like to find the beauty in something, and the right angle and setting to showcase that. Photography is something that I’ve always enjoyed, but hadn’t taken seriously until I decided to stay home with my son. I started photographing some of our favorite moments, and have really enjoyed the process and learning that art.
4. Three words that best describe your style.
Minimal, modern, natural.Â
5. I admire your sustainable lifestyle. You put a lot of effort into promoting conscious decisions making on your Instagram account /Aprilmayatherton/. Stroller made of recycled materials, bag from a vegan leather made with consideration for the environment. Can you tell us more about it and how important this is for you?Â
I truly believe in leaving the world a better place for our children than we have right now. If I can play a small part in my own life, and try to show people that there are sustainable alternatives to easily implement in their everyday lives, then we’ll be a step closer to that reality.Â
6. Of course, we are curious why you chose the Rafa-kids R toddler bed for your son and whether this choice was his or yours?Â
I love the R toddler bed for a bunch of reasons! It’s clean, modern design with a whimsical nod, matches both mine and Oliver’s sensibilities. It feels like something that we can grow into, and because of the way the Rafa collection can shift it into other variations, we can use it for years to come. Maybe it’ll be a bunk bed in a couple years!Â
7. Raising a child ( soon children – as April is expecting her second child in December ) can be quite a challenge when it comes to a minimal lifestyle. Have many things changed since you became a mom, in that matter?Â
When we first had Oliver, I did feel the pressure to collect every toy, book, and knick knack we could find. Society told us that the way to his happiness was to have everything possible. We took a step back, and realized that that wasn’t for us. I went back to my roots, and wanting to keep things as minimal as possible. Now Oliver is able to really enjoy and explore his toys and his world, because he isn’t overloaded with them.Â
8. And lastly, could you reveal some of your guilty pleasures with us?
Picking up coffee and banana bread on the way to the park, collecting beautiful magazines that I may or may not end up actually reading, and plants that I can’t keep alive.
THANK YOU so much, April, for taking your time and sharing with us a bit of your life.
We wish your family all the best.Â
